Tirohanga nui House
Nestled down a private driveway in South Hill and oriented to maximise northern exposure, Tirohanga Nui was a home carefully designed to capture the breathtaking harbour, Waitaki coastline, and majestic inland mountain views that defined Oamaru’s unique landscape.
The design brief emphasized preserving the existing building’s height to ensure the home remained sympathetic to its surroundings and minimized visual impact on neighbouring properties. Spread thoughtfully over two levels, the residence offered multiple generous entertaining spaces that flowed effortlessly onto expansive outdoor areas—creating versatile living options that remained inviting and functional in all weather conditions.
Tirohanga Nui boasted a spacious four-car garage, a state-of-the-art home cinema, and four well-appointed double bedrooms, each complemented by its own private ensuite. The expansive open-plan living area was framed by large windows that not only flooded the interior with abundant natural light but also provided uninterrupted panoramic views of the stunning natural environment.
To harmonise with the local architectural vernacular while introducing a contemporary edge, low-maintenance cedar-look Flashclad cladding was chosen. Though distinct from traditional homes in the area, this residence was designed to stand as a lasting architectural statement and cherished legacy for the Oamaru community.
