The shallow mono pitch roof creates a simplistic object in space.
Large eaves provide shelter throughout the year, allowing the sun to enter in the winter and heat the slab while limiting the access in the warmer months. Large north facing windows capture the panoramic views while windows to the south are minimal.
The materials selected have low maintenance at the clients request while also being tactile around the areas the clients will congregate in. The house was designed for the climate with a fully thermally broken slab, recessed thermally broken double-glazed windows and increased insulation above and beyond the building code throughout.
The placement on site has been designed for the opportunity to extend in the future.
Riverbank sits on an escarpment overlooking the Cardrona River. It has historic significance and was originally an industrial shed and was then converted into a dance studio. The distinctive curved roof provided a rare opportunity to transform the interior space for its new function as a beauty salon with accommodation.
A semi-circular waiting area provides a central space for the treatment rooms to pivot off while accentuating the height and curve of the building. The addition of new skylights flood the treatment rooms with natural light while existing high level windows now capture the sun rising from the loft bedroom suite.
It has been a pleasure transforming this unique building shell into a spectacular retreat on the edge of Wanaka.
Arklow Alteration was a single car garage on the edge of the property and was shaded most of the day. The brief was to convert this into accommodation for the client’s family who visit regularly from overseas.
The split mono pitch roof allows all day northern sunlight to enter the building while creating a unique high ceiling internally. Corrugated iron cladding and roofing were selected for their minimal maintenance.
Alison Avenue sits on the edge of the Clutha River with sensational panoramic mountain views. The existing house was in original condition and craved more natural light to open up the house to the river views.
The relocated staircase, new ensuite, large steel beams creating wider openings and new exterior cladding has transformed the building into a modern house sitting proudly on the edge of the riverbank.
